The rapid adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) is fundamentally transforming modern power systems and accelerating the evolution of intelligent charging infrastructures. Future EV charging systems will extend beyond conventional energy replenishment to become integrated cyber-physical platforms that enable bidirectional energy exchange, grid flexibility, and intelligent mobility services. This special session aims to present recent advances and emerging research trends in EV charging technologies and their applications from interdisciplinary perspectives.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, optimization and control algorithms for EV charging and energy management, smart grid integration, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technologies, distributed and coordinated charging strategies, power electronics and converter technologies, battery management systems, renewable energy integration, and charging infrastructure planning. The session also welcomes recent developments in artificial intelligence and machine learning, including reinforcement learning, large language models, and data-driven optimization for intelligent charging operation and predictive energy management. In addition, platform technologies for large-scale EV charging services, digital twins, cloud-edge architectures, cybersecurity, and intelligent transportation systems are within the scope of the session.
This session will provide a forum for discussing theoretical advances, practical implementations, and future challenges toward sustainable, resilient, and intelligent EV charging ecosystems. The session aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and identify new research directions that will support the next generation of electrified transportation and smart energy systems
Jun Moong received his Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign, USA, in 2015. He received the B.S. degree in electrical and computer engineering and the M.S. degree in electrical engineering from Hanyang University, Seoul, South Korea, in 2006 and 2008, respectively. From Mar. 2019 to Aug. 2020, he was Assistant and Associate Professors in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Seoul, South Korea. From Feb. 2016 to Feb. 2019, he was an Assistant Professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), South Korea. From Feb. 2008 to Jun. 2011, he was a Researcher at the Agency for Defense Development (ADD) in South Korea. He was the recipient of the Fulbright Graduate Study Award 2011. His research interests include stochastic optimal control and differential games, nonlinear filtering, mean field games, distributed and networked control systems, and reinforcement learning.
