Abstract

The increasing penetration of renewable energy resources, battery energy storage systems, electric vehicles, and power electronic converters is transforming modern energy systems into highly interconnected and actively controlled cyber-physical infrastructures. Achieving reliable, efficient, and resilient operation in these systems requires intelligent energy management and control across multiple temporal and spatial scales, ranging from market-based scheduling and coordinated microgrid operation to fast dynamic control of grid-forming inverters and DC/DC converters. This special session aims to present recent advances and emerging research trends in intelligent energy management and control for power electronic energy systems.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, optimal and risk-aware energy management for microgrids and multi-microgrids, coordinated operation of battery energy storage systems and vehicle-to-grid resources, demand response participation, and scheduling in day-ahead and real-time electricity markets. The session also covers advanced control strategies for grid-forming converters, including grid-strength-aware control, auxiliary damping, power reference control, and stability enhancement under varying grid conditions. Particular attention is given to intelligent control and system identification methods for power electronic converters, such as dual-active-bridge DC/DC converters.

The session further welcomes recent developments in artificial intelligence and data-driven control, including reinforcement learning, residual learning, model-based reinforcement learning, uncertainty-aware decision-making, and Koopman operator-based modeling and control. By bringing together research at the energy system, microgrid, and converter levels, this session will provide a forum for discussing theoretical advances, practical implementations, and remaining challenges. The session aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and identify new research directions toward adaptive, robust, and intelligent power electronic energy systems.
