SS03. Grid-Interactive Electrified Transportation Systems: Modeling, Operation, and Market Integration

Abstract

The rapid electrification of transportation is reshaping the interaction between mobility systems and electric power grids. Beyond conventional road electric vehicles, emerging forms of electrified mobility, including electric buses, trucks, ships, aircraft, and autonomous transportation platforms, are creating large-scale, spatially distributed, and highly uncertain electricity demands. At the same time, these flexible transportation resources can provide valuable grid services through coordinated charging, vehicle-to-grid operation, demand response, and market-based participation. These developments require new modeling, planning, control, and market design approaches that jointly consider transportation behavior, charging infrastructure, grid constraints, renewable energy integration, and operational uncertainty.
This special session aims to bring together researchers, industry practitioners, and policymakers working at the interface of transportation electrification and power systems. The session will provide a focused forum for discussing recent advances in grid-interactive electrified transportation systems, with emphasis on scalable modeling, coordinated operation, infrastructure planning, resilience enhancement, and economic mechanisms that enable reliable and sustainable integration of electrified mobility into future power grids.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Modeling and forecasting of charging demand for multi-modal electrified transportation systems
  • Coordinated charging and vehicle-to-grid operation of electric vehicles and fleets
  • Operation and control of electrified transportation resources in distribution and transmission grids
  • Planning of charging, discharging, and energy storage infrastructure for integrated power-transportation systems
  • Market mechanisms and incentive designs for transportation-grid interaction
  • Resilience, reliability, and cybersecurity of coupled transportation and power infrastructures
  • Integration of advanced electrified transportation technologies, including autonomous vehicles, electric ships, and electric aircraft, into modern power systems
  • Data-driven, optimization-based, and AI-enabled methods for transportation electrification and grid coordination
Biography

Hongcai Zhang received the B.S. and Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 2013 and 2018, respectively. In 2018-2019, he was a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, USA. In 2019, he joined the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City of the University of Macau, Macao, China, where he is currently an Associate Professor. Hongcai Zhang’s research focuses on urban integrated energy systems, transportation electrification, and demand-side resources. He is currently an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, and the Secretary-General of IEEE PES China Energy and Transportation Nexus Subcommittee.

Chengcheng Shao received the B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Xi’an Jiaotong University, Xi’an, China, in 2011 and 2017, respectively, where he is currently a Professor. His research interests include the power and energy system planning and the integration of electrical vehicles into the power grid. Dr. Shao is currently an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Transportation Electrification, and the Vice Secretary-General of IEEE PES China Energy and Transportation Nexus Subcommittee.

Zechun Hu received the B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Xi’an Jiao Tong University, Xi’an, China, in 2000 and 2006, respectively. He was a Research Officer with Shanghai Jiao Tong University and also with the University of Bath from 2009 to 2010. He joined the Department of Electrical Engineering, Tsinghua University, in 2010, where he is currently a Professor. His major research interests include optimal planning and operation of power systems, electric vehicles, and energy storage systems.
